This session will cover key skills needed to work in the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) field to obtain quality clinical outcomes and maintain professional resiliency. Our culture is ladened with shame and stigma for individuals and families. Engagement and empathy are key factors for success while providing autonomy and accountability to the individuals served. This session will increase the counselor’s awareness of skills needed to increase treatment outcomes. Topics covered will include ethics, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma informed care, and De-escalation Skills associated with SUD and Co-occurring Disorders. This session is designed to offer time for group discussion pertinent to the participants.
Deborah Thomas is a seasoned leader in behavioral health with over three decades of experience in clinical management, program development, and organizational leadership. As the CEO of The Walker Center in Twin Falls, Idaho, Deborah oversees a nonprofit substance use disorder treatment facility, including a 47-bed residential detoxification program and outpatient services for both adults and adolescents. The Walker Center has been helping thousands recover from addiction since 1976. Her extensive background includes roles in clinical supervision, quality improvement, and grant writing. Deborah is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Master Addiction Counselor. In addition to her work at The Walker Center, she serves on several behavioral health advisory boards, contributing to state and regional efforts in addiction treatment and mental health services.
